Two secondary school students participated in our internship program, "Bacterial Resistance to Antibiotics." Hope that this experience provided them with invaluable insights and could pave the way for their future endeavors in this critical field of research.

We are proud to announce that Inês has achieved her Master’s degree in Biochemistry.

Her thesis, "Effects of short-chain fatty acids on Aliarcobacter butzleri's virulence" highlights her dedication to pushing the boundaries of our field. We warmly congratulate Inês on this remarkable accomplishment and look forward to her continued success in the future.

As part of our ongoing tradition, we had the pleasure of presenting some of our work at the XIX Annual CICS-UBI Symposium this year.

AJSTEAM 2024

UBI prioritizes knowledge production and dissemination to prepare new generations for success. The Junior STEAM Academy (AJSTEAM) aims to develop STEAM skills in high school students through interdisciplinary activities, fostering discovery and enriching learning experiences in an academic setting.

We were delighted to participate in these activities, engaging in day-to-day microbiology with great enthusiasm and enjoyment.

Marina Posso with oral communication

We are pleased to announce that Marina Cassago Posso, presented an oral communication titled "New fluoroquinolone-phenothiazine hybrids with antibacterial properties against Staphylococcus aureus" co-authored by João Lourenço Serrano, Paulo Almeida, Fernanda Domingues, Samuel Silvestre, and Susana Ferreira.

We are pleased to highlight the following poster presentations from our research group at Microbiotec’23:

  1. Inês Fonseca, Cristiana Mateus, Fernanda Domingues, Mónica Oleastro, Susana Ferreira presented "Effects of Short Chain Fatty Acids on Aliarcobacter butzleri’s Virulence".

  2. Alexandre Vieira, Cristiana Mateus, Fernanda Domingues, Mónica Oleastro, Susana Ferreira presented "Antagonistic activity of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum against Aliarcobacter butzleri".

  3. Inês Martins, Alexandra Nunes, Mónica Oleastro, Susana Ferreira presented "Evolution of Aliarcobacter butzleri under low ciprofloxacin concentrations associated with the selection of multidrug-resistant mutants".

  4. Alexandra Coimbra, Susana Ferreira, Felice Panebianco presented "Effect of Melissa officinalis essential oil on biofilm formed by Listeria monocytogenes strains isolated from meat industries".

  5. Cristiana Mateus, Fernanda Domingues, Roland Bücker, Mónica Oleastro, Susana Ferreira presented "Effect of htrA gene in the pathogenicity of Aliarcobacter butzleri".

These posters showcased innovative research findings and contributions to the field of microbiology and biotechnology. We congratulate all the presenters on their valuable work and insights.

It was with a great honour that we received Microbiotec’23 - Microbiology and Biotechnology Congress, promoted by the Portuguese Society of Microbiology (SPM) and the Portuguese Society of Biotechnology (SPBT), at the University of Beira Interior, Covilhã  from the 7th to the 9th of December. With Susana Ferreira co-charing the event, researchers at various stages of training and career, as well as business professionals, came togetehre at Covilhã to discuss and share the latest advances in the areas of microbiology and biotechnology.

We are pleased to announce that André has successfully completed his Master's degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences. This accomplishment reflects André's hard work and dedication throughout his studies.

André's thesis on "Avaliação da atividade antibacteriana de esteroides da série pregnano e androstano - Experiência Profissionalizante na vertente de Farmácia Comunitária, Hospitalar e Investigação" demonstrates his commitment to advancing knowledge in our field. We congratulate André on reaching this milestone and wish him all the best in his future endeavors.

This year later than usual, but in good company with colleagues from Microbiology from CICS-UBI, our microbiology activities for young students have been incredibly rewarding and enlightening. We've witnessed the joy and wonder on children's faces as they discover the hidden world of microbes.

Visiting researcher

We were thrilled to host Felice Panebianco, a visiting researcher from the University of Turin, in the scope of the Grant for Internationalization from UNITA: "Assessment of innovative eco-friendly technologies to contrast Listeria monocytogenes biofilm in the food industry". Throughout his stay,  along with our dedicated work, we also ensured to share moments of bondering, fostering both professional and personal growth. We eagerly anticipate this opportunity to enhance our research endeavors together.
